Here is a copy of the email I sent around!
Quote:
Dear Econ Majors and Minors,
Since it is advising time once again, we in the department decided to give you some advice! First off, you will find linked a document that summarizes our spring 2009 upper-level offerings:
http://www.econ.tcu.edu/harvey/announcements/Spring_2009_Update.pdf
With each class is listed the instructor, time and days, prerequisites, where it counts in the major, and what other attributes it may have (plus I decided to toss in instructor emails in that column since it was mostly blank). We hope this will allow you to make a more informed decision as to which classes you need/want. Bear in mind that the fourth column is a little tricky since we have three different majors (BA, BS, and International Econ) and that we changed each of those as of Fall 2007. Anyone declaring during that semester or since then is subject to these requirements:
Fall 2007 and beyond: http://catalog.tcu.edu/undergraduate/1787.htm
Anyone declaring before that is subject to these requirements:
Pre-Fall 2007: http://www.econ.tcu.edu/program.html
When you see “Fall 2007+” or “pre-Fall 2007" on the linked document, it is an attempt to differentiate between the two sets of majors. Also, there are times when it is necessary to distinguish among the BA, BS, and International majors. I did my best to do that both briefly and clearly–I was optimizing under a constraint! Please let us know if you have any questions. Also, previous advising notes may be found on the econ department BBS:

Second, when I raised the possibility of sending this note around, one of the things faculty asked me to include was to include a reminder to get advised! We all have horror stories about students who took courses on the advice of classmates, siblings, parents, strangers on the street, strangers in public transport, Miss Cleo, tea leaves, etc., only to discover that their “senior” semester turned out to be their third junior one because they hadn’t taken the required courses. Don’t be one of those stories! You should be able to determine who your advisor is by checking under my.tcu.edu.
Again, let us know if you have questions and good luck with the rest of this semester!
JTH
